Job Title: Traffic Signal Technician
Job Description : NATURE OF WORK:
This is advanced level work in the installation, repair, maintenance and operation of computerized traffic signal systems and related apparatus. Employees in this class perform in accordance with standard practices and assignments may be accompanied by sketches, blueprints or schematics, with work also arising out of inspections and troubleshooting. Work is performed under the general direction of the Traffic Signal Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs work required to install new traffic signals and systems including signal heads, detectors, microprocessor based controllers, wiring, support poles, and fiber optics.
Performs bench work repairs, overhauling and rebuilding complex electronic or electrical equipment and components.
Performs emergency and routine field servicing of complex traffic signal equipment, streetlights, and bridge lighting, often operating or working from an aerial bucket truck.
Insures compliance with the national manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Calculates lead times on equipment repairs and request materials, supplies or manpower as required and maintains related records and logs of repair/maintenance activities.
Maintains and reports inventory balances of critical parts.
May perform specialized work in the maintenance and operation of the Countywide Intelligent Transportation System.
Follows through directly on routine requests.
Performs other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school.
Five (5) years' experience in the servicing, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment. Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver's license with driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
Must be a licensed journeyman electrician. Possession of I.M.S.A. Traffic Signals Level I certification within twelve (12) months of employment.
A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language
Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver License
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of electronic and electric principles and practices.
Knowledge of the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic controls.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment in the electrical trade.
Ability to splice fiber optic cable.
Ability to withstand exposure to varying weather conditions and work in confined spaces and at considerable heights
Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
Working knowledge in the use of MS Word, Excel and Outlook is essential.
Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public.
Outstanding project management and organizational skills.
Working Conditions
Work requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).
Risk/Safety Conditions
This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment) This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.
Essential Physical Activities:
Bending/stooping, sitting, standing, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement of firm grasping and fine manipulation, repetitive motions, depth perception, balancing, squatting, working at heights . This position may require lifting up to 100 lbs and carrying up to 100 lbs.
